Update

During FY Q1-26, the following pedestrian and bicycle safety projects were completed: 1) 230 feet of new sidewalk were installed on Roberson Street. 2) A pedestrian refuge island and a new crosswalk were constructed on Fidelity Street. 3) Bike lanes on Fidelity Street received fresh striping and high-visibility green bike crossings. 4) Tar Hill Drive bike lanes were repainted with added green bike crossings and crosswalks. 5) Rock Haven Road also had its bike lanes repainted with green bike crossings and crosswalks. 6) Bicycle detection systems were implemented at four intersections: E. Main St. at Roberson St., W. Main St. at N. Greensboro St., Weaver St. at N. Greensboro St., and NC Highway 54 at W Poplar Ave.

In FY26 Q2, the Bike Loop detection projects was completed at five intersections in town.

Next Steps

Public Works will maintain coordination with the contractor to finalize necessary repairs to the bicycle and pedestrian bridge on the Homestead–CHHS bike path, damaged by a fallen tree in August 2024. Concurrently, the department will continue evaluating existing infrastructure to identify opportunities for enhancing pedestrian and bicycle safety. Implementation efforts may be impacted by challenges including limited funding, planning delays, and resource constraints.
