Update

In 2023, the Town installed solar arrays on the roof of the Public Works building and Fire Station 1. The clean, green renewable energy produced by these solar panels combined with the zero emission energy sources on Duke Energy's grid makes up almost 60% of the total energy used in municipal buildings. 

Unfortunately, the solar array on the Public Works building has been off-line since July 2025 due to damage caused by Tropical Storm Chantal. On the bright side, the 75kW solar array on the roof of the Drakeford Library Complex was connected to the grid in September 2025 and will increase the Town's solar production significantly.

This is great progress, but there is much more work to be done to reach the Town's goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2030. To reach our goal will require powering municipal buildings with 100% zero emission energy sources.

Next Steps

The Climate Action team and Public Works will continue to search for opportunities to decrease the amount of power used by municipal buildings. The Town Hall renovation project, which is scheduled to begin in FY26, will be scoped to be highly energy efficient and will include a solar array along with other green energy features.
