Analysis | |
On a monthly basis, Thornton uses a reservoir forecasting model to estimate how much water will be in the city’s reservoirs on July 1. When July 1 storage is forecasted to be less than 75% full, it is an indicator that the city may need to activate the Drought Management Plan.
At the end of June 2022, it was projected that the City's water reservoirs would be 94% full on July 1, 2022.
City Impact On Performance |
The city attempts to maximize how much water it diverts into storage in order to meet the July 1 target. However, the amount of water in storage is largely dependent on winter snowpack, summer streamflow conditions, and customer usage.

Why Is This Important |
The July 1 storage target is one of several indicators the city uses to evaluate water supply conditions. These indicators help assess whether the city is in drought, assess the severity of the drought, and implement appropriate actions – such as watering restrictions – to effectively manage water supply during times of drought.
