Why is this important? |
Cuyahoga County provides healthcare to over 13,000 employees and dependents. In 2016, the County spent over $101 million on healthcare costs for employees and their dependents. Research tells us that 75% of healthcare spending is attributable to behavior-related and preventable illnesses, and that 48% of organizations found wellness programs keep healthcare costs down. Focusing on prevention (behavior-related and preventable illnesses) can lower healthcare cost increases for the County and our employees. Wellness programs can also develop healthier, happier, and more productive employees.
How are we making an impact? | |
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we live, work, and deliver programs and services at Cuyahoga County. The Wellness program was minimally impacted by COVID-19 as a result of moving Cuyahoga County Wellness Program offerings from in-person to virtual events. With the stresses and challenges that this pandemic has had, and continues to have, on the physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing of individuals, there really could not have been a better time to have a strong wellness program in place. The County responded and adapted programming to focus more on mental wellbeing. Program communications increased and more virtual webinars were offered on topics like stress management, yoga and meditation, tips for working at home, and creating new and fun ways to stay engaged with each other when socially distant. The County extended the deadlines for certain “required” actions in the wellness program, such as biometric screenings, to help employees who could not get in to see their physician and to also make program goals more achievable. Additionally, one of the County's EAP providers, Moore Counseling and Mediation Services, extended the number of counseling sessions available to individual employees from 6 per year to 10. As a result of program modifications and the Cuyahoga County Department of Human Resources response to employee needs employee participation in the wellness program remained strong in 2020.
