About this measure

Measures reported on this page show the total number of registered voters in Cuyahoga County, the percent of the eligible population registered to vote, and total voter registrations from customers of Cuyahoga County agencies.

Data are reported by the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections on a quarterly basis.
Why is this important?

The Charter of Cuyahoga County gives County government the charge to protect the right to vote and undertake measures to promote voter registration. In addition to providing comprehensive voter services and transparent elections, Cuyahoga County is committed to making voter registration easy and accessible to everyone. Every voice matters and through regular tracking of voter registration data it can be seen how efforts to help residents learn more about the importance of voting and make the process more accessible are impacting voter registration numbers.
How are we making an impact?

Three elections were successfully conducted by the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections in 2020.  This includes the:

  • March 17 Primary Election, which was extended to April due to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic,
  • August 4 Special Election (Maple Heights Tax Levy), and
  • November 3 General Election (which produced a voter turnout percentage of 70.99%).

Social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, served as a valuable mechanism to educate and inform voters during 2020 election cycles.  Additional outreach conduced by the Cuyahoga County Executive’s Office, the Cuyahoga County Department of Health and Human Services, and many community partners presented individuals with a variety of opportunities to register to vote and stay informed on how to vote safely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As of December 29, there were 890,797 registered voters in Cuyahoga County. Per Secretary of State's Directive 2020-14 Cancellation Procedures for Completion of the 2016 Supplemental and National Change of Address (“NCOA”) Processes were conducted on December 30. This led to the cancellation of 8,460 registrations in the database.  

As of December 31 there were: 

  • 81,739 paper registrations processed,
  • 101,827 online registrations processed (60,569 voters moved within Cuyahoga County and 41,258 voters moved into Cuyahoga County from outside the jurisdiction), and
  • 882,421 registered voters in Cuyahoga County.

Data table abbreviated due to number of measures.  See Attachments for full data table.  

*Percent of Eligible Population Registered is calculated by dividing the number of registered voters reported by County Board of Elections at the November General Election by voting age population estimates reported through the American Community Survey for the same year.  In 2019, the number of registered voters in Allegheny County was higher than the County's voting age population estimate, causing the County's percent of eligible population registered to be over 100%.

The last available population estimate from the American Community Survey Demographic and Housing Estimates was released for 2019 in July 2020.  2020 comparative analysis data for the percent of eligible population registered to vote will be included in a future reporting period.
