About this measure |
This measure shows the average daily population of Cuyahoga County jail facilities, which include the Cuyahoga County Corrections Center in Downtown Cleveland, the Euclid Jail Annex, and the Bedford Jail Annex. Both the Euclid and Bedford facilities were added during the second quarter of 2018.
Monthly data are reported by the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department on a quarterly basis.

Reducing unnecessary incarceration, while maintaining public safety, is a key priority for Cuyahoga County. The impacts of unnecessary incarceration can be devastating to defendants, their families, and the broader community. By monitoring the jail population, the County contributes to ongoing academic research that is assessing the effects of bail reform, diversion, and re-entry services on public safety.
How are we making an impact? | |
Concentrated efforts are being made to reduce the jail’s population, which resulted in an overall decline in jail population during the third quarter of 2019. Key improvements to address overcrowding include the formation of new team leaders which include Chief of Staff Bill Mason, Jail Administrator Ronda Gibson, Interim Sheriff David Schilling, and Warden Gregory Croucher. The County has also hired the American Correctional Association to assist in guiding jail reforms. Additional methods of decreasing jail population include no longer housing federal prisoners and transporting misdemeanants to other Ohio County jails to serve out their sentence.
