County Jail Population

- All people have equal access to justice
About this measure

This measures the average daily population of Cuyahoga County Jail facilities. Cuyahoga County Jail faculties include the Cuyahoga County Corrections Center, Euclid Jail Facility, and Bedford Jail Facility. Both the Euclid and Bedford facilities were added during the second quarter of 2018. Average daily populations are reported each quarter by Cuyahoga County Regional Corrections. Peer communities are reported by county.

Why is this important?

Reducing unnecessary incarceration, while maintaining public safety, is a key priority for Cuyahoga County. The impacts of unnecessary incarceration can be devastating to defendants, their families, and the broader community. By monitoring the jail population, the County contributes to ongoing academic research that is assessing the effects of bail reform, diversion, and re-entry services on public safety. The reduction of unnecessary incarceration while maintaining public safety is a top priority.

How are we making an impact?

Cuyahoga County understands and shares the community’s concerns regarding the state of the region’s criminal justice system. To promote collaboration among criminal justice partners, the Criminal Justice Council (CJC) was established in 2018 by Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish and Judge John J. Russo. Made up of court officials, police, prosecutors, defense attorneys, city and County officials, and advocacy groups, the CJC will address many of the criminal justice system’s current challenges. Top priorities include bail reform and enhanced treatment of suspects with mental-health concerns.
