About this measure

The measure tracks the number of deaths due to opioids in Cuyahoga County. Data for Cuyahoga County is reported by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office. Comparative analysis data is reported to the Medical Examiner.
Why is this important?

Opioid overdoses have a tremendous impact on Cuyahoga County. First and foremost, fatal overdose victims pay the ultimate price - losing their lives. Family and friends are also severely impacted by this loss. Parents lose children, siblings lose siblings, young children lose their parent(s). The crisis is also hitting virtually every County department and division
through increased cost of service delivery.
How are we making an impact?

In the face of this crisis, the County remains committed to fighting this epidemic. In 2017, the County filed a lawsuit against several drug manufacturers and distributors for downplaying the risks involved with using prescription opioids. Funding continues to be provided to support and expand rehabilitation programs, Drug Court, and increase treatment and sober beds. Project DAWN (Deaths Avoided with Naloxone), an overdose education and naloxone distribution program, had over 200 documents overdose reversals. Cuyahoga County currently has over 40 Rx Drug Drop Boxed located at law enforcement agencies. Rx Drug Drop Boxes provide an environmentally-friendly disposal process, and reduces risks involved with leaving prescription medications in a household. Finally, the County continues to spread the word about the dangers of opioid prescriptions tied directly the crisis through the #KnowTheRx campaign launched in 2017.
