About this measure |
This measure indicates the number and percent of children achieving permanency within 12 months of entering the child welfare system. Permanency means a child has exited Cuyahoga County's custody and a court has ordered either:
- custody returned to the parents/caregivers,
- legal custody to another caregiver, or
- adoption to a licensed home.
Data are reported by the Cuyahoga County Division of Children and Family Services on a quarterly basis.
Why is this important? |
Every child who enters the child welfare system deserves a permanent family. If a child cannot be safely returned to their family Cuyahoga County has a responsibility to find a permanent family that will love, protect, and nurture them. Children who enter the child welfare system have better outcomes when permanency is achieved within 12 months of removal.
How are we making an impact? | |
As we enter Child Abuse Awareness Month, we continue to focus on recruiting foster parents and supporting kinship caregivers to meet the needs of children who enter the custody of DCFS. We recognize the dedicated members of our staff who continue to investigate allegations of abuse and neglect, provide interventions and resources to help families remain intact, and make the difficult recommendations when children need to be removed and placed. An immediate search for family is complete through our 30 Days to Family Program, and once contact has been made, the agency has dedicated staff who explore potential placement. While the number of available foster homes has been declining, DCFS has continued to build capacity and resources with kinship placements, as well as developing a process and structure to ensure that these kinship receive the financial support available from the State of Ohio and continued through funding from Cuyahoga County.
