Cuyahoga County supports economic development in part through the investments of the Department of Public Works (DPW) and collaboration with municipal governments and regional agencies. The DPW partners with local municipalities to fund capital projects along 794 miles of county routes, performs inspections on 508 bridges, culverts, and other structures, and oversees the maintenance of 22 miles of roads and 209 bridges. Information obtained from these inspections is used in the assessment of current conditions, the determination of needed maintenance and repairs, the prioritization of rehabilitations and replacements, and the coordination of appropriate funding and resources.

Funding for capital projects is provided by the Ohio Public Works Commission, the Federal Highway Administration through NOACA or the County Engineer’s Association of Ohio, Cuyahoga County, and area municipalities. On average, county road and bridge projects receive approximately 77 percent of their funding from federal sources while the remaining 23 percent comes from local contributions. The DPW is responsible for the local match contribution on local bridge projects.

In 2020, the Cuyahoga County Department of Public Works received a $30 million CARES Act grant for COVID-19 modifications.  These modifications were made in County owned and lease facilities to ensure the health and safety of the employees as well as the general public.
