About this measure |
This measure provides the total tax assessment for all properties subject to property tax in Cuyahoga County. Data reported for Cuyahoga County are provided by the Cuyahoga County Budget Commission. Peer community data reported are provided through Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports or Annual Information Statements.
Why is this important? |
Property taxes represent a significant portion of the revenue stream that flows to local government and schools. The total tax assessment is based upon the values of the property within each municipality. Stabilizing and growing that tax base allows for continued services that residents use and count on each day. Cuyahoga County was hit hard in the foreclosure crisis. The decline in jobs led to a loss of population and declining housing values because of the blight left from people abandoning their homes. While there are some signs of recovery, that recovery is uneven across Cuyahoga County.
How are we making an impact? | |
This is a community indicator measure. It is provided to show an understanding of the overall community health. The County organization does not directly control the outcome of this measure. However, a number of programs and initiatives the County is undertaking can have an impact.
Cuyahoga County is taking active steps to improve its property tax base by making investments in homes and community infrastructure, as well as increasing its outreach and support of taxpayers with more flexible and efficient tax collection strategies. Future priorities include continued investment in housing and infrastructure and finding new ways to engage property owners early before becoming delinquent. This strategy does not necessarily grow the tax base, but ensures communities receive the taxes they are due.
