Why is this important? |
Communities and neighborhoods are vital to a person’s decision on where to reside. To make communities more stable and desirable for people to live and thrive, Cuyahoga County invests in housing and community infrastructure to promote, attract, and retain residents . This investment enhances a community's aesthetics and protects the value of investments made by residents in their homes and neighborhoods. The performance measures reported allow the County to identify and review areas that have the most need or have been most affected by Department of Development initiatives and create concentrated strategic efforts to continue assistance in conjunction with the County and a partnering municipality's or organization's Master Plan for Housing and Community Development.
How are we making an impact? | |
The Department of Development awarded 12 Municipal Grants totaling $1,788,782 with the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funded by HUD and 30 Supplemental Grants totaling $1,445,042 with the Community Development Supplemental Grant (CDSG) funded through the Casino Revenue Fund provided to Cuyahoga County Council. As such, no awards were granted in the third quarter of 2021 for Municipal and/or Community Development. These grants continue to be a catalyst for revitalization efforts throughout the county providing health and welfare benefits through projects such as Public Facility Infrastructure improvements, Sewer/Street/Road repairs, Parks and Playgrounds, ADA equipment and facility upgrades, Street Signage and Wayfinding rebranding, and even Homeowner repair programs. These initiatives of sustainable projects assist with creating jobs per the contracts awarded while potentially and more specifically creating opportunities for low income and very low-income residents and businesses to earn, learn, and thrive in Cuyahoga County. These projects not only have a lasting impact on the residents and local constituency they serve but also on visitors, travelers, and neighboring communities.
Demolition activity has significantly increased in Q2 and Q3 which may be due the easing of COVID restrictions. Out of the $50 million that was allotted for the Demolition Initiative in 2015, the Department of Development has expended approximately $40 million as of Q3, with eight (8) contracts that have been encumbered for expenditure of the remaining balance of approximately $9 million. . This effort has removed several thousand blighted and/or vacant structures.
