About this measure

SkillUp is a business advisory service offered by the Cuyahoga County Department of Development that helps businesses create an “industry-recognized” apprenticeship program for each needed skill area. SkillUp partners with business leaders to create customized roadmaps and repeatable training plans, each with a specific list of on-the-job training tasks.

Measures on this page include 

  • the number of businesses engaged in SkillUp, 
  • the number of custom SkillUp training road maps created, and 
  • the number of SkillUp training opportunities attempted.

Data are reported by the Cuyahoga County Department of Development on a quarterly basis.
Why is this important?

SkillUp impacts Northeast Ohio by delivering increased skills, education, work experience, and wages to employers and their workers. By helping businesses identify and implement plans to train their workers, businesses can better control their talent supply and account for their skill needs. Simultaneously, residents benefit from increases in skill, education, work experience, and wages. This series of activities yields regional economic growth and inclusion.
How are we making an impact?

Working with Northeast Ohio employers and community partners, Cuyahoga County designed an innovative approach based on best practices to make the region’s workforce a competitive advantage for Northeast Ohio. This approach has two goals:

  1. To support business growth and profitability through a workforce pipeline that delivers a sufficient and steady supply of qualified candidates at all skill levels to keep jobs filled, and
  2. To help residents with employment barriers become skilled workers pursuing career and wage pathways.
