Why is this important? |
Integrating sustainable practices into County operations is a key component of the Cuyahoga County Sustainability Plan as detailed in Strategy 6: “Demonstrate the County’s leadership in environmental stewardship by increasing the utilization of sustainable, green practices throughout the organization.” By adopting more sustainable practices as an organization, Cuyahoga County can support improved environmental, health, and economic quality of life for present and future generations.
Performance Target |
This page is a milestone measure, meaning updates take the form of qualitative, project-based narratives to provide additional details related to core County programs and services. Measure performance is impacted by a number of factors, including funding levels, strategic priorities, community need, and policy decisions made at the federal, state, and local level. Performance targets are not set for milestone measures, but timely reporting of updates is important.

How are we making an impact? | |
The Department of Sustainability is currently working with County departments to adopt more sustainable practices throughout the organization. Current efforts include working with the Department of Public Works to identify energy efficiency projects in County buildings, install rooftop solar panels on County buildings, and bring composting to County correctional facilities.
Several of the rooftop solar projects include panels installed on the Medical Examiner's Building, the Jane Edna Hunter Building, and the Animal Shelter. The Harvard Road Garage will have solar panels installed in 2021 after roof repairs have been made. The County also continues to purchase power through a virtual net metering agreement from the Brooklyn Solar Landfill, which increases the County's energy consumption from renewable sources.
