Why is this important? |
Integrating sustainable practices into County operations is a key component of the Cuyahoga County Sustainability Plan detailed in Strategy 6, “Demonstrate the County’s leadership in environmental stewardship by increasing the utilization of sustainable, green practices throughout the organization.” By adopting more sustainable practices as an organization we can support improved environmental, health, and economic quality of life for present and future generations.
How are we making an impact? |
The Department of Sustainability is currently working with County departments to adopt more sustainable practices throughout the organization. Current efforts include working with the Department of Public Works to identify energy efficiency projects in County buildings, explore potential implementation of rooftop solar on County buildings, and bring composting to County correctional facilities.

The recently installed Brooklyn Solar Array is generating power for 14 County buildings and was awarded Solar Builder Magazine’s Gold Project of the Year. The County is currently in contract negotiations for rooftop solar installations at the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office, Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter, and Harvard Road Garage. Department of Sustainability staff continue to promote the UH Bikeshare to County employees, purchasing 25 corporate memberships through an award from the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency.
