The Market Street District Plan was accepted by City Council in February 2019. There is $150,000 in the current budget for improvements recommended from the plan. Staff has identified several projects to initiate and is currently working on budgets and timelines for the specific projects. Those projects include, but are not limited to, removal of vacant slabs, installation of signage and decorative lighting, partial street overlays, and landscaping public areas.
On July 25, 2019, City Council passed a resolution to designate the western segment of the Market Street Corridor as the Historic West End. This area has unique characteristics with several vintage buildings and its redevelopment would provide a direct benefit to the nearby dense residential stock. The formal designation is just the beginning to help branding the area and improve its reputation and image. Ideally, branding enhances the community character by emphasizing its identity and history. This type of branding helps to support place-making concepts, such as uniform signage, themed landscaping, and repetitive design elements in public and private improvements. The goal is to encourage excitement and a sense of pride that everyone in the area can appreciate.
The Public Works Department has begun replacing and adding new sidewalks in the Historic West End area to improve pedestrian mobility.
The efforts continue to implement the Market Street District Plan.
