Parks and Recreation Staff along with the Engineering Department are working to re-dredge Bayland Marina and channels due to heavy siltation caused by Hurricane Harvey. The basin and channels were dredged prior to re-opening the marina following Hurricane Ike in 2012, however, Hurricane Harvey dumped hundreds of cubic feet of silt into the channels making it difficult to enter and exit the marina. Moffat & Nichol has been selected to map the channels and develop plans for a fall or early winter dredging of the Bayland Marina and channels project, depending on when the proper permits can be secured. The consultants are working to secure these needed permits with the Corps of Engineers and Port of Houston while also searching for a deposit site for the dredge material, bid documents and over sight of a contractor to do the work. The consultants are also including the needed Aids to Navigation signage and beacons that were lost or destroyed by Hurricane Harvey.
Staff is working on funding for the estimated $830,000 city match for the project, including working with FEMA. In addition, the Municipal Development District is expected to approve funding for the project in the FY2018-19 budget process.
There currently are no plans to dredge the area near Evergreen Bluff Park. The future park has not been planned yet and there are no plans or location for a boat dock. There would be a significant cost to dredging the area as well as significant time needed to gain the needed permits.
