Safeguard Nevada County’s economic durability, environmental integrity, and public health and safety by preparing for, adapting to, and mitigating changing climate conditions in a way that reflects our rural quality of life.

Progress Update

      Highlights from Q2 (April-June 2023) include:
      • Submitted grant requests totaling nearly $2 million dollars to Department of Energy, Sustainable Agricultural Lands Conservation, and Habitat Conservation Fund with partners including Resource Conservation District, SYRCL, and Town of Truckee to further Board initiatives of hardening critical infrastructure through building weatherization, and carbon sequestration through natural and working lands through agricultural conservation and meadow restoration, respectively.
      • Identified priority GHG reduction measures with regional jurisdictions as a partner in the through the EPA Climate Pollution Reduction Grant Program.
      • Nevada County awarded Civic Spark fellow to provide staff support for climate objective.
      • Nevada County Transit Services has begun the process of transitioning its medium and heavy-duty bus fleet to zero emission vehicles with the purchase of two 35ft low-floor battery electric transit buses and the related charging equipment.
      • County workgroup is developing strategies to comply with SB1383 and reduce methane emissions through Recycled Organic Waste Procurement targets. The County will contract with Zero Foodprint (ZFP) will provide compost procurement to meet or exceed Nevada County’s 2023 SB1383 procurement target of 910.5 ton of compost.
      • Outdoor Visitor Safety Fund grants awarded for restoration work in the Euer Valley in Eastern Nevada County and Van Norden Meadow totaling $99,000.
      • Pursuant to Board direction, staff completed extensive research on California Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) programs, launched community outreach and education plan, including presentations and webpage.

Next Steps

Plans for Q3 (July-September 2023) include:

  • Partner for submission to Regional Climate Collaboratives and Regional Resilience Grants to further Nevada County’s Climate Action Plan development and support convening climate resilience stakeholders in Western Nevada County.
  • Continue community outreach and education for Community Choice Aggregation through presentations at Town Halls, municipal advisory committees, neighborhood associations, and coordinated roundtable events to seek Board approval in October.
  • Continue planning and host 2nd Annual Nevada County Sustainability Summit Sept. 27th.
  • Identify framework, resources and consultant to develop Nevada County’s Climate Action Plan
