Promote sustainable recreation in partnership with community providers and other jurisdictions to enhance recreational access, support public health and safety, realize economic opportunities, and preserve natural resource assets.

Progress Update

Highlights from Q2 (April 2023 – June 2023) include:

  • Significant progress made developing the Recreation and Resiliency Master Plan:
    • Assessing data, opportunities, trends, and plans review;
    • Robust outreach with active, diverse participation countywide;
    • Two public surveys and community engagement windows;
    • Stakeholder review of findings from <1800 public survey responses;
  • Visitor safety and user management through grant administration and community collaboratives:
    • Outdoor Visitor Safety Fund grant program (Round 2) received 20 proposals with 12 invitations extended for panel review;
    • South Yuba River Public Safety Cohort "Stay Out, Stay Alive" press event and visitor intercept river safety campaign ahead of peak-season messaging with Go Nevada County integration and over one million digital shares;
  • Proclamation of Celebration of Trails month, launching new Nevada County Trail Finder app and emphasis on outdoor recreation advocacy;
  • Submitted >$2M in grants for improving recreation access, active transportation solutions and visitor safety, with decisions pending; and
  • Convened South Yuba River Public Safety Cohort and CCC collaboratives, special district meetings and Nevada County Recreation Coalition.


Next Steps

Infrastructure investment, planning and public information campaign will continue during peak visitation months to enhance recreation access, safety and stewardship of resources.

Plans for Q3 (July 2023 - September 2023) include:

  • Begin Recreation and Resiliency Master Plan Phase 4 development to include draft 2.0 Project Matrix and launch of next community engagement window;
  • Host Board of Supervisors at Donner Summit to highlight recreation and economic development investments and tour collaborative project sites, e.g. Van Norden Meadow 
  • Convene forum with Blue Forest Finance in Donner Summit on outdoor recreation economy, natural infrastructure projects and feasibility of a Headwaters Recreation & Resiliency Fund;
  • Present Outdoor Visitor Safety Fund (round 2) grant award recommendations to Board of Supervisors for approval and initiation of agreements;
  • Distribute weekly travel alerts, coordinated messaging and campaign materials to promote river safety and ensure accurate information; 
  • Complete call-box installation and repairs; deploy life jackets and safety signage at Yuba River crossings;
  • Provide administrative support to Western Nevada County recreation and park districts through quarterly meeting, grant writing, project management and planning assistance;
  • Submit grant applications for NSAQMD and solicit funding opportunities for active transportation, climate resilience and recreation; and
  • Hire and onboard Recreation and Resiliency intern.
