Equitably expand broadband to support economic development, distance-learning, telework, telemedicine, and general quality of life for all residents by championing the implementation of Nevada County Broadband Strategy Plan policies and last-mile infrastructure projects.

Progress Update

Highlights from Q2 (April through June 2023) include:

  • Promoted Nevada County residents’ participation in the state’s digital equity survey and reached 764 total responses from our county as of July 14, far exceeding the target of 250. The data from this survey will help the state identify priority areas for broadband funding.
  • Nevada County also provided support for the state’s digital equity event, held in Grass Valley on May 12.
  • Provided letters of support for two local internet service providers’ applications for state-level California Advanced Services Fund grants.
  • Issued a request for qualifications to grow Nevada County’s collaboration with and knowledge of internet service providers seeking to expand broadband in the county. Received seven responsive applications.
  • Reviewed one application for Dig Once funds and determined that it was not a good candidate for that program.
  • Worked with the Golden State Connect Authority toward a final high-level design for their project in Nevada County.

Next Steps

Plans for Q3 (July through September 2023) include:

  • Complete the permitting toolkit, to support the programmatic EIR and future broadband construction projects.
  • Arrive at a finalized high-level design for the broadband expansion project with the Golden State Connect Authority.
  • Review and respond to any applications for Dig Once funds.
  • Meet with the CPUC to discuss their potential rulemaking establishing performance and customer service standards for video and broadband providers.
  • Evaluate and select ISPs from the pool of Request for Qualifications submissions.
  • Write letters of support for vetted ISPs applying for FFA applications, as appropriate, to help expand broadband access in Nevada County.
