Economic Development
Board of Supervisors 2023

Promote economic development by emphasizing resiliency and entrepreneurship; retaining and attracting high quality jobs; investing in major infrastructure projects; and working with local, state and federal partners to support our small business, nonprofit, and tourism sectors.

Progress Update

Highlights from Q2 (April - June 2023) included:

  • In its first year, the economic development office participated in over 140 unique business, agency, and nonprofit meetings that helped connect individuals to county departments, local economic partners, and other resources.
  • The Economic Development Webpage launched on the myneveadacounty.com website and is designed as a starting place for new and established businesses. The goal is to set them on a path for success by pointing them to resources, connecting them to county departments, and/or referring them to community partners. Phase I includes information on the Economic Development Office services, a section on Starting a Business, a Helpful Links tab, two Readiness Assessment tools, and more.
  • Economic Development launched the first e-newsletter in June 2023 with a 73% open rate. The goal is to become a one stop shop for information relevant to business such as funding and financing information, introduction of new businesses, available commercial space and storefront space options, state and federal economic news, relevant data, and more.
  • Activities through the Sierra Business Council and Small Business Development Center contract resulted in:
    • 182 Business consultation meetings
    • 320.5 hours of Technical Assistance consultations
    • 57 workshops with 403 participants
  • The Economic Development Office has engaged Integrated Communication Strategies (IGS) to help develop Nevada County's first two-year Economic Development Action Plan which will create a roadmap for the County and our regional partners.

Next Steps

Plans for Q3 (July - September) include:

  • Initiate a strategy to more closely align economic development goals with tourism activities such as collaborating with hospitality establishments to identify joint marketing opportunities, coordinating with the recreation office on visitor information and promotion, participating with Visit California on their strategic planning process for the Gold Country, and engaging with Donner Summit businesses on promotion for their area.
  • Continue to build out the economic development toolkit focused on responding to economic disruption, recovery steps, and fostering resiliency in a manner that creates a strong, sustainable local economy that provides opportunity for business and improves residents' quality of life.
  • To help mitigate fire risk, CDA will continue its work on the North San Juan Fire Suppression Project focused on updating project costs, securing remaining easements, finalizing environmental studies and laying the groundwork for the Proposition 218 process.
  • Involvement with youth workforce will empower young people with knowledge, resources, opportunities and support to help them gain the fundamental skills needed to be successful. Economic Development is collaborating with local partners such as Sierra College, the career technical steering committee, Trades Day organizers, Curious Forge, and the newly formed Nevada County CEO program to give our community's youth the tools to navigate their life choices.
