Board of Supervisors 2023

Promote sustainable recreation in partnership with community providers and other jurisdictions to enhance recreational access, support public health and safety, realize economic opportunities, and preserve natural resource assets.

Progress Update

Q1-23

Recreation was established as a priority Board Objective for a second year, with momentum continued into 2023 across six initiatives.

Highlights from Q1 (January - March 2023) include:

  • Completed Phase One inventory and asset mapping for the Nevada County Recreation and Resiliency Master Plan, with launch of first public survey and project story map at www.nevadacountyrecreation.com/plan.
  • Opened request for applications to second round Nevada County Outdoor Visitor Safety Fund grants, with $434,000 in funds available to address health and safety at high-use/high-risk recreation areas.
  • Submitted $250,000 in grants to (1) Innovative Finance for National Forests for a financing feasibility and outdoor recreation economic impact study; and (2) LSTA to expand Nevada County Library Recreation & Resiliency resources.
  • Awarded $100,000 from the Nevada County Community Resiliency Fund to Bear River Recreation and Park District for turf field replacement.

Next Steps

Q1-23

Infrastructure investment and coordinated campaign development ahead of peak visitation months will enhance recreation access, safety and stewardship of resources.

Plans for Q2 (April - June 2023) include:

  • Extend finalist invites to apply for Outdoor Visitor Safety Fund, with Evaluation Panel to select and recommend awards to CEO and Board of Supervisors for approval.
  • Initiate callbox repair at Purdon Crossing, due to vandalism, and new installation at Bridgeport (pending any delays from the vendor).
  • Coordinate Yuba River public safety press event and launch of public safety and responsible recreation campaign.
  • Coordinate and distribute life jackets and safety signage at Yuba River crossings with BLM, State Parks, Tahoe National Forest and Cohort partners.
  • Proclaim June as Celebration of Trails month to include launch of Nevada County Trail Finder app and county-supported trail maintenance at Hirschman Trail.
  • Submit and support grant applications for priority recreation infrastructure, access and stewardship projects to the following:
    • CalTrans Clean California Local Grant Program;
    • Wildlife Conservation Board; and
    • Various CA State Parks programs. 
  • Convene recreation partners through the monthly collaboratives, Western Nevada County recreation and park districts quarterly meeting, and Biannual Recreation Coalition.
  • Hire and onboard Recreation and Resiliency intern.
