Equitably expand broadband to support economic development, distance-learning, telework, telemedicine, and general quality of life for all residents by championing the implementation of Nevada County Broadband Strategy Plan policies and last-mile infrastructure projects.

Progress Update

Q1-23

Highlights from Q1 (January through March 2023) include:

  • Completion of the broadband environmental impact report, a tool that will help streamline environmental approvals for future broadband construction projects in Nevada County.
  • Continued promoting the federal subsidy for broadband services in eligible households through the Affordable Connectivity Program.
  • Developed a Request for Qualifications (RFQ), a tool that the County will use to vet internet service providers who are interested in potentially partnering with the County on future projects or seeking the County’s advocacy on projects they are undertaking.

Next Steps

Q1-23

Plans for Q2 (April through June 2023) include:

  • Publish and publicize the RFQ in order to strengthen ties to active internet service providers who want to help expand broadband in Nevada County.
  • Develop a toolkit to provide high-level explanation of the broadband environmental impact report.
  • Disseminate the updated broadband strategy.
  • Promote Nevada County residents’ participation in the California Public Utility Commission’s hearings assessing state standards governing voice service and, eventually, broadband service.
