Progress Update

Q1-23

Highlights from Q1 (January - March 2023) include:

  • Announced Outdoor Visitor Safety Fund (OVSF) round two request for applications, with $434,000 available for eligible projects; first round OVSF recipients made progress on parking, trail development and toilet installs ahead of peak season;
  • Established South Yuba River Public Safety Cohort 2023 priorities and launched dedicated webpage at www.NevadaCountyCA.gov/Recreation; the group previewed and provided feedback on the Wild and Scenic River corridor mile marker trail project;
  • Began process to install new emergency call box at South Yuba River State Park Bridgeport location;
  • Development of public safety and responsible recreation campaign funded by Sierra Gold Parks Foundation and Nevada County; and
  • Convened east county leaders and ski resorts to address traffic and parking impacts through coordinated visitor messaging.

Next Steps

Q1-23

Plans for Q2 (April - June 2023) include:

  • Extend full application invites to Outdoor Visitor Safety Fund second round grant finalists, with Evaluation Panel to select and recommend awards to CEO and Board of Supervisors for approval in July;
  • Complete install of call box at Bridgeport (pending any delays from the vendor) and address vandalism damage to Purdon Crossing call box;
  • Coordinate Yuba River public safety press event and launch of public safety and responsible recreation campaign prior to Memorial Day; and
  • Coordinate life jacket and safety signage at Yuba River crossings with BLM, State Parks, Tahoe National Forest and Cohort partners for May installation.
