Reduce Hazardous Vegetation on County-Maintained Roads and County Owned Property

Description

Public Works and Facilities are responsible for managing hazardous vegetation treatment along county-maintained roadways and properties. These departments are developing vegetation treatment plans, pursuing grants, and are implementing strategies across departments to achieve greater fuels reduction on County properties to serve as examples of land stewardship and to keep members of the public and properties safe. 

Progress Update

Q1-23

The County Road Maintenance Division conducted seasonally appropriate vegetation abatement and tree removal to ensure safe ingress and egress on County roads. 

Highlights from Q1 (January-March 2023) include:

  • County Road Maintenance Division completed 6 miles of vegetation management and 0 miles of weed abatement spraying. Winter weather conditions are not conducive to spraying. The Road Maintenance Division’s goal is to complete 22 miles of vegetation management for calendar year 2023.
  • The vendor for the CAL FIRE Grant (5GA21115), JW Bamford, cleared 123 trees, for a total of 378 trees removed since November 28, 2022, with 17 trees remaining on the contract.

    Next Steps

    Q1-23

    The County Road Maintenance Division will continue vegetation abatement and tree removal to ensure safe ingress and egress on County roads, in particular in the aftermath of the 2023 Winter Storm. 

    Plans for Q2 (April-June 2023) include:

    • Continue to seek funding and use existing funding to reduce roadside vegetation to continue making evacuation routes safer during this year’s fire season.
