Recycling Participation |
Analysis |
The City has seen annual participation rates equal to or greater than 90% since 2011. 2020 marked the first year that rate dropped below 90%. While rates have remained fairly steady, total tonnage recycled has been dropping over this same period. Reasons for tonnage decrease are unknown but could be attributed to reduced product packaging, changes in consumer habits, and evolving norms.
Why is this Important? |
When you toss something in the garbage, it’s taken to a landfill or incinerator. Much of the waste could be reused, recycled, repurposed, or composted. Landfills and incinerators are expensive and reducing the amount of refuse disposed of at them helps reduce the economic and environmental costs of disposal.
