Analysis

While the general trend of increasing number of businesses over time is largely a reflection of a robust local economy, the sharp increase in 2017 is due also to heightened discovery and audit efforts in Commissioner of the Revenue. Additional resources in staffing and data sources initially implemented in 2016 are now yielding measurable results.

The number of businesses by sector was previously captured quarterly and will be reporting monthly starting in July 2017.

In March 2013, staff began recording the total number of active "countable" buisinesses as of the 1st of each month to give context to the number of new businesses being reported. This number does not include all business licenses, peddler, one-time contractor, certain other one-time activities and duplicate licenses (such as additional licensing for ABC activities) are not included.
