A Traffic Accident Rate is a measure of a jurisdiction's reported annual traffic accidents per 1,000 Residents. To arrive at this rate, a comparison of each year's reported traffic accidents must be compared to that year's estimated population size, and then scaled to 1,000 residents. In this way, jurisdictions with vastly different population sizes can more easily compare the quality of traffic safety in their populations.
