Description

The City of Charlottesville commissioned the Center for Survey Research to conduct an Employee Survey of all full and part-time employees. The purpose of the survey was to assess employees’ satisfaction with their work environment and give employees an opportunity to contribute their ideas and opinions to help make the City of Charlottesville a better place to work. This is the fourth year that CSR has conducted a similar survey for the City.


Of the 923 employees invited to do the survey in 2014, 356 completed the survey by web and 41 completed the survey on paper. A total of 397 employees participated overall, which is a 43% response rate. The survey was conducted from October 29, 2014 to January 9, 2015.

Rating the City of Charlottesville as a Place to Work

How satisfied are you overall with the City of Charlottesville as a place to work?

Respondents were asked to rate their overall satisfaction with the City of Charlottesville as a place to work on a scale from 1 to 7 where 1 means “Extremely Dissatisfied” and 7 means “Extremely Satisfied.” Overall, employees are satisfied with the City of Charlottesville as a place to work. More than one-half (55.7%) said that they are extremely or very satisfied with the City of Charlottesville and 30.4 percent said they are somewhat satisfied. Nearly eight percent (7.4%) indicated that they are somewhat or very dissatisfied, and 1.1 percent said they are extremely dissatisfied with the City of Charlottesville as a place to work. Over five percent (5.4%) of respondents rated their “Overall Satisfaction” as neutral.


On the scale from 1 to 7, the mean rating for “Overall Satisfaction” is a favorable 5.41. The 2014 mean rating of 5.41 represents a statistically significant improvement from the 2012 mean rating of 5.25 and comes close to reaching the overall highest mean attained since 2006 of 5.47 which was the mean in 2010.
