The current strategy is to ensure that projects in the designated Conservation and Historic Districts are reviewed by the Board of Architectural Review (BAR) to ensure that historic resources are protected as well as preserved for the next generation. Neighborhoods with historic resources are also scheduled for historic survey, the pre-requisite for designation as a historically significant area and subsequently slated for protection and preservation activities. Additionally, NDS  seeks Commonwealth of Virginia Historic Preservation matching fund to undertake historic surveys of eligible neighborhoods. North Belmont Neighborhood was recently completed and Rose Hill, Star Hill and Ridge Street Neighborhoods are scheduled for historic survey.
