Description

Charlottesville Area Transit measures efficiency and productivity by counting passenger trips. Each time a person boards a CAT bus, one trip is counted.

Analysis

Ridership for FY18 is 2,052,376.

This is a 6.27 % decrease under FY 2017 and indicates a decrease and leveling off of the decreases in ridership that the system has been experiencing since FY 2013. This is consistent with national trends in decreasing ridership which have been driven by lower fuel prices and lower unemployment which allows individuals to maintain the convenience of private vehicle ownership. Passengers per revenue hour fell from 22.21 in FY2017 to 19.64 in FY2018, an 11.6% drop. Passengers per revenue mile fell from 2.30 in FY 2017 to 2.13 in FY 2018, a 7.2% drop. It should be noted however that in FY 2018 CAT traveled 1% greater revenue miles and provided 6% more revenue hours of service to its users. UVA Ridership decreased 4% during FY 2018 while ridership on routes funded by and serving the Albemarle County urban ring communities rose 2.24%
