Implement the MAPP, CHIP and The WHO Age-Friendly City recommendations

Goal 2. A Healthy and Safe City
Description

The city wishes to support the organizations engaged in improving the safety and healthy of our community.

To that end, the city was an active participant in the 2016 MAPP process and in the creation of the 2016 Community Health Improvement Plan which identified 5 major health priorities for the region: 

1) Promote healthy eating and active living

  • Preventing obesity
  • Promoting healthy food
  • Promoting physical activity

2) Address mental health and substance abuse

  • Reduce need for hospitalization
  • promote mental health through a stigma-free culture and availability of services
  • identifying & enacting policy, system, and environmental changes

3) Improve health disparities and access to care

  • identifying and decreasing health disparities
  • increasing health equity by improving access to care for everyone
  • increasing the diversity of providers and fostering cultural humility within the healthcare workforce

4) Foster a healthy and connected community

  • improving child & adolescent health outcomes through trauma-informed approaches
  • improving healthy aging strategies

The Charlottesville Area Alliance exists to ensure the development of an age-friendly community consistent with the research conducted by the World Health Organization. The city has committed to assessing the community's age-friendliness against the World Health Organization's 8 domains as part of membership in the AARP Age-Friendly Community Network:

  • outdoor spaces & buildings
  • transportation
  • housing
  • social participation
  • civic participation & employment
  • communication & information
  • community support & health services

Status

The MAPP2Health Community Health Improvement Plan is actively being implemented in the priority areas: promote healthy eating and active living, address mental health and substance abuse, reduce health disparities and improve access to care, and foster a healthy and connected community. Details can be found here: http://www.vdh.virginia.gov/th...  The Charlottesville Area Alliance is assessing the region’s age-friendliness this summer and fall using two types of surveys, focus groups and stakeholder interviews. This data will be used to identify specific recommendations in each of the WHO’s eight age-friendly domains in 2019.
