Analysis

There were 5 GO training program graduations in CY17:

GO Driver 5 – 7 participants graduated on March 10, 2017

GO Utilities – 4 participants graduated on March 27, 2017

GO Driver 6 – 5 participants graduated on September 5, 2017

GO Driver 7 – 6 participants graduated on December 1, 2017

GO GED Pathways – 5 participants graduated on December 19, 2017

GO Driver  recruited low-income City residents and trained them to be Transit Bus Operators with Charlottesville Area Transit and Charlottesville City Schools Pupil Transportation. All 18 of the participants that graduated obtained employment as a result of the GO Driver program.

GO Utilities recruited low-income City residents and trained them to be Maintenance Workers with the Charlottesville Department of Public Works.  All 4 of the participants that graduated obtained employment as a result of the GO Utilities Program.  Three of the four participants are continuing their studies at CATEC to pursue a registered apprenticeship through the Virginia Department of Labor.

GO GED Pathways was an introductory pre-GED course that recruited low-income City residents and gave them the educational foundation needed to be prepared to enter into a GED prep course.

The GO training programs are jobs driven, meaning that there must be an employer partner (or multiple employer partners with a need for employees with similar skill sets) with a significant number of vacancies (8+) for a GO training program to be developed or offered.  In 2017, this demand came from other City departments (CAT and Public Works) which allowed interdepartmental collaboration to recruit and train City residents to fill vacancies within the City.
