Deliver and expand strategies to promote cradle to college and career support for children

Goal 1: An Inclusive Community of Self-sufficient Residents
Description

In an effort to promote community resilience and the healthy development of children in our community, the city supports the use of expanded high quality early childhood education and community-based programming for young people struggling to meet academic achievement benchmarks. City of Promise, a neighborhood-based intervention in the 10th & Page area, seeks to meet the needs of families with children falling behind in school. A new Youth Opportunity Project seeks to provide direct services to youth throughout the community with practical support and promote the use of community-wide, organizational and systemic solutions to address the 'achievement gap'.

Why and What it Achieves

Graduating from high school and attending college is a formula for individual and community success.

Status

City of Promise continues to report strong results for youth living in the 10th & Page footprint. In 2016, City of Promise participants transitioned from high school to college at rates 10% above the national average . In the same year, City of Promise participants outperformed their local peers in SOL test scores.

A full-time Youth Opportunity Coordinator was hired in December 2017 to support the strategic plan of the Alliance on Black Male Achievement. Among other tasks, the coordinator will work with Lighthouse Studios in 2018 to produce a youth-directed series of films celebrating the achievements of local black men.
