Environmental Sustainability Footprint - Reduce Water Per SQ FT

Public Works
Description

Water use in the City's buildings come from various source users including toilets, faucets, heating and cooling equipment, and irrigation to name a few. The efficiencies of these source users as well as the behavior of the human users can have a large impact on the amount of water a City building uses each year. By making new or renovated facilities as water efficient as possible and educating the users to use water wisely, we hope to continue to decrease our annual water usage across all City Buildings. The City has not yet set a water use reduction goal yet; however, we continue to monitor water usage each month and evaluating areas to improve water use efficiency.

Analysis

The City has not set a target for water usage per square foot; however, the City continues to monitor water usage of all City building types. Overall water usage per square foot has been variable each year with no significant trend. This variation can be the result of large water leaks, changes in occupancy numbers, and changes in water fixture efficiency.

The City is implementing a water managment plan for all City building types to address water efficient fixtures and appliances, education programs, and monitoring accounts for large changes in water consumption each month. Irrigation and water fountains/spray grounds were looked at in regards to total water usage over time as these areas did not have accurate square footage associated with each account. In FY19, there were several large water leaks that were identified and repaired.

Please note several assumptions have been made for this date including the following:
  • Building square footage has not been annually adjusted.
  • Building types were kept the same as the building types used in the "Site Energy Intensity" Measure; however, some buildings are not included if no water account is associated with them and vice versa.
  • The "Other Buildings" group contains various use type buildings of a large variety that may fit in already defined building types.
