Measure Definition & Importance |
A pothole is a structural failure in asphalt pavement, caused by the presence of water in the underlying soil structure as well as traffic passing over the affected area. The process for evaluating a pothole involves crews tracking the size, depth, and condition of the pothole and the surrounding asphalt. The national standard for measuring potholes is 2 feet x 2 feet x 4 inches deep. The issues associated with potholes include tire blowouts, damage to vehicles and occupants, and additional damage to the asphalt. The overall target is 10,000 less than the FY17 target because the goal is to better maintain streets before potholes make an appearance.
