In keeping with its mission to serve and protect the community through education, prevention, preparedness and response, the Fire Department offers a number of public education and safety programs including the National Fire Protection Association's Learn Not to Burn preschool program; Stop, Drop and Roll fire safety technique, Fort Worth Drowning Prevention Coalition, Vial of Life Project, Juvenile Fire Settters program and Free Smoke Detector Program. In addition, the Department participates in many safety fairs, career fairs, CPR lessons, fire drills and emergency evacuation plan reviews. The public education effort is to teach people of all ages how to make responsible choices regarding health and safety. The commitment is to give people the knowledge and skills that they need to lead safer lives. While there is no industry standard related to public education efforts, the current measure is based on annual participation at prior years' events. This goal was increased from the previous participation target of 15,000-20,000 citizens based on the desire to reach more citizens. When the Department is succeeding at its target, it can be attributed to increased attendance at community events and programs, as well as increased requests for school programs.
