| | Fire turnout time 80 seconds or less 90% of the time.FD-Fire Department |
Measure Definition & Importance |
Based on the National Fire Protection Association 1710 Standard, fire turnout time measures the interval between the time of dispatch (notification of the emergency alarm) until the first company is en-route to the emergency incident (wheels rolling). A company means a department apparatus (e.g. attack trucks, quints, engines, etc.) and crew used to respond to emergencies in a first responder's role. This measure focuses on how quickly personnel can react to fire emergencies and is one of three time components defined in NFPA Standard 1710 4.1.2.1 (2) & (4) relating to emergency response system performance. (The others being call receipt and processing time and travel time.) The overall goal is to minimize systemwide response times to increase the likelihood for positive patient outcomes and minimize property damage. Increased turnout times may signal a number of things, including inefficient station configurations, gaps in operating procedures and training and limited staffing availability (e.g. due to personnel responding to other emergency events).
