The Park and Recreation Department operates three special use facilities: the Fort Worth Botanic Garden (which includes the Japanese Garden), the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge, and the Log Cabin Village. The Japanese Garden is a 7.5 acre Japanese Garden in the Botanic Garden that was built in 1973. It has three koi ponds, a teahouse, pavilion and Zen Garden. The Botanic Garden opened in 1934 and is the oldest botanic garden in Texas. It is comprised of 110 acres and 22 specialty gardens. The Nature Center was founded in 1964 and covers 3,621 acres and includes over 20 miles of hiking trails, making it one of the largest city-owned nature centers in the United States. It was designated a National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1980. Log Cabin Village is a 19th century living history museum that was founded in 1958. Sitting on 2.5 acres, Log Cabin Village consists of nine historic structures dating back to the mid-1800s. Historical interpreters demonstrate various frontier chores like blacksmithing, woodworking, candle making, spinning and weaving.
The Japanese Garden, Nature Center and Log Cabin Village all charge an admission fee, thus making it easy to accurately track attendance. Tracking attendance is an important measure as it provides visitor numbers for trending (weather, time of year, event success/failure, visitor preferences, historic data, etc.) and necessary staffing levels to serve customers. The target attendance for fiscal year 2017 is 200,000 and was based on averages in attendance on optimum years over the last several years. Years with poor weather, for example, would likely fall below this target. Years with good weather or new or popular events or programs would see increased attendance above the target.
TripAdvisor Ratings. Tracking customer satisfaction through TripAdvisor is equally important as it provides visitor-generated evidence for the customer’s level of satisfaction with the venue and the services and programs being offered. If attendance is low, you can look to additional information detailed below to find an explanation. If attendance is high, it is possible to see what the contributing factors are. If reviews are positive, then it shows you are providing the level of service and/or programs desired by your audience with the appropriate level of customer satisfaction. If approval ratings are low, then it provides an area to address either with programming and/or with employee performance. The Botanic Garden, Nature Center, and Log Cabin Village monitor customer comments on Facebook, Yelp, and TripAdvisor. Results are compiled and reported monthly, and staff advised of any comments that staff can address to deliver better customer service/satisfaction. The target TripAdvisor rating is 4 out of 5 stars, signifying that all venues exceed expectations. The rating scale is: 5 Excellent, 4 Very Good, 3 Average, 2 Poor, and 1 Terrible.
