Section 45.050 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure requires juveniles to have the opportunity to appear before a judge to explain why they did not follow through with a judicial order of Teen Court. During the hearing the judge may allow them to complete the Teen Court program or require the juvenile to pay the fine. To be in compliance with the current law Teen Court staff will set 80% of the delinquent cases for a show cause hearing each quarter to resolve cases in limbo

Juveniles are given 180 days from the date of initial appearance requesting Teen Court and 90 days from their Teen Court trial to complete the Teen Court program. Show cause hearings must be set as soon as possible after the 90 day due date in order to stay within the 180 day requirement. Staff will run an excel spreadsheet repot on delinquent cases and set them for the first available show cause hearing date. Show cause hearings are set on Wednesdays at 8:30 a.m.
