Measure Definition & Importance |
While we provide compassionate care to the animals while in our care, one of the end goals of Animal Care and Control (ACC) is to find the best homes possible for all shelter pets. This measure gives us an indication on the success of our efforts to return animals to their owners in the field, reunite animals with their owners if the animals have been placed in the shelter, and to adopt out or place in responsible foster care. This measure helps us to evaluate our services, our staffing, public education, and medical care. 100% is not a reasonable target due to sick or injured animals that are beyond medical treatment. The live release rate is the number of animals that have a positive outcome (I.E. leave the shelter alive). It is a nationally recognized benchmark tool and 90% is a nationally recognized goal for all shelters. Shelters that reach this goal are considered industry leaders.
