Measure Definition & Importance |
A hazardous structure is defined by City ordinance as a building or structure whose condition is dilapidated, substandard or unfit for human habitation and which poses a risk or harm to the public health, safety and welfare. The priority of the Building Standards Division (BSD) staff is to work with property owners to repair or remove hazardous structures that present a danger to community. BSD staff will also present hazardous structure cases (a case in which at least one structure on the property has been identified as being hazardous) at the Building Standards Commission. Management requires that staff give greater focus to the priority 1 structures since they are the structures that present the greatest life, health and safety dangers to the community. These structures also present blight for the neighborhood and have the effect of bringing down property values.
